Mike Gallo was born in Houston, Texas. His father played Tuba and Bass Fiddle in many different bands well-known around the Houston area, his mother plays piano and they both sang in the church choir. Mike grew up going to band practice with his dad, listening to many different styles of music and being exposed to many fine musicians. When he was in the sixth grade, he decided to give the guitar a try. His father also played guitar, showing him some chords and teaching him a few songs. Later that sixth grade year, Mike played on stage for the first time in a class play. Just two years later, in October of 1967, Mike and two classmates played on stage in a talent show and were well received. By then Mike knew that the guitar would always be an important part of his life. In his freshman year in high school he formed a band which later that year
went on to perform at a high school dance. It was about this time when he started to put together some of his own music. By his junior year, he had joined another band and performed again at his
school and some other functions around town. The following year he left that band to begin his solo career. He had written several songs, and had begun experimenting with sound on sound recording on
his parents' recorder. After he graduated in 1972, he was invited the next year to play yet again for his high school. He moved to Austin for a couple of years to try to find a place for his music,
but the progressive country scene overshadowed his light rock/blues style, so he returned to Houston. He played open mic. nights at many of the clubs around the Richmond/Westheimer area. Soon after,
he began playing at Sand Mountain on Richmond and was so well received that he began playing there three nights a week. It was a place that allowed him the freedom to grow as a musician, honing his
skills for a small but appreciative crowd. In 1976, Mike began a new part of his life when he married his high school sweetheart DeLores Koster. They had been friends for many years, and she sat backstage during most of his shows. Mike's first big break into recording occurred when DeLores purchased him a 4-Track recorder. All of his ideas could now be put onto tape. He continued to write, play and record. In 1978, they purchased some land northwest of Houston, and captivated by the serenity decided to build a house. The two built a geodesic dome with their own hands and celebrated Christmas of 1980 in their new house. While work, homebuilding and parenting took much of his time, over the next 18 years Mike still managed to write and record, and he still played at private events fairly often. Many a friend, relative and acquaintance asked for him to play for their weddings, anniversaries, or other special events. His purchase in 1997 of his digital recorder started the next phase of his
recording career. He started moving his analog tapes into digital and preparing them for CD production. Mike decided that he would produce his own CD, so in the next few years he purchased the last
few pieces of gear required to make the finished product. Finally, in 2003, he released to the public his first two CDs, "Burgandy" and "Babe In The Woods" and once again started to book live shows
to promote his new CDs. All of the music on his CDs was written, performed and recorded by Mike, as all of the photography on both CD jackets. |
